What is PR Publications?

Updated: Jul 3, 2022

Over the course of the semester, I've written many blogs related to PR Pubs. In this blog, I'll be going over what PR Pubs is as a whole and going over some important things to remember.

What is it?

PR Pubs provide free, controlled media designed for publics who are similar, whether it be in characteristics and interests. Organizations support these publications to improve or maintain healthy relationships with publics.

As it is a controlled media, organizations control the messaging relating to publications and most PR pubs are directly distributed to a reader or audience.

Due to it being designed for publics that share similar qualities, these publics are best used when target publics are narrowed down and better understood. Utilizing research is one of the most important things one can do when working with publications.

Types of PR Pubs

There are many different types of PR publications, many of which I utilized over this semester. Some include:

  • Newsletters

  • Flyers

  • Brochures

  • Letterheads

  • Logos

  • Handouts

These are very helpful in getting messages across and maintaining good relationships with publics. Some things that can go along with these and help promote organizations include utilizing strategies (communications, research, etc.), creating competitor analysis', analyzing stakeholders, utilizing campaigns, etc. Some notable software helpful for using publications are Photoshop, InDesign and Canva.

Final things to remember

Something that I've learned over the last couple of months that's so important is knowing your audience. Knowing your audience well allows an organization to sustain a better relationship with them and helps to improve the organization as well. To know an audience well, research and developing an understanding at the start is crucial.

Lastly, utilizing design concepts is fundamental to designing and publications as a whole. Some design concepts include symbols, balance, harmony, unity, proportion, typography, etc. These are important for making a design more appealing and interesting to a viewer. Utilizing them helps to make a good design and without these elements, a design will fall short of its ability to attract and convey a message.
